Both of these lighthouses are on the National Register of Historic Places, and are still serving their function as a navigational aid. The both need extensive repair, have no utilities, and are accessible only by a boat.

The one above, known as Old Orchard Light, was built in 1893, out of cast iron, and the interior features about 1,000 sq ft of space. It used to have a live-in keeper, which has long since been replaced by a solar-powered lighting. The lighthouse is located about three miles off of New Dorp Beach. The West Bank Light, above, was built in 1901. It sits on manmade island, accessible by a boat. The interior of the former keeper’s living quarters has two floors and appoximately 1,500 sq ft. You can find more information about this property here.

I think either one of them would make for a great retreat. They both need lost of work, but for those with means and imagination this could be a once in the lifetime opportunity to own a piece of history, and a unique property.

So, what do you do if you’re the next door neighbor of such individuals? You can start by telling them that such bbq is a safety hazard to the building and the neighbors. Your condo/co-op board should have written house rules that spell out the bbq rules and regulations. You can ask the board to address this issue. Your last resort may be calling 311 and reporting it.

It’s a lot of fun, easy to do, and free to the public. Every Saturday for the past three weeks Kayak Staten Island, an all-volunteer organization, provides kayaks, paddles and life jackets to those who want to experience the thrill of kayaking. The volunteers are extemely pleasant and helpful. They are located at the very end of the boardwalk, closest to the Verrazano Bridge.

You can go solo, in pairs, or even take your kids with you – I’ve seen whole families on kayaks. You can learn more about Kayak Staten Island here.  The next day for kayaking is Sunday, August 8th.
